United States Army, Air Service
This was the name of the evolving USAF between May 24, 1918 and July 2, 1926. American flyers had already been in the air war over Europe, most notably in the French-commanded Lafayette Escadrille. Woodrow Wilson initially established this independent flying organization by executive order.
The Air Force Song was written in 1939, including the words shown under the aircraft’s right wing …
Off we go into the wild blue yonder,
Climbing high into the sun;
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At ‘em boys, Give ‘er the gun!
Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,
Off with one helluva roar!
We live in fame or go down in flame. Hey!
Nothing’ll stop the U.S. Air Force!
